Of the Italian Lakes, slender, forked Lake Como (Lago di Como) comes most heavily praised;
it’s a “treasure which the earth keeps to itself” wrote William Wordsworth.
This has been the retreat of choice for hard-pressed urbanities for a couple of thousand years at least;
Virgil knew of the lake, then called Lacus Larius (and still referred to today as Lario),
while the Roman general Pliny had two villas here, one near Lenno, the other at Bellagio,
and wrote in glowing terms of the natural beauty all around.
The combination of forested mountains and blue water and sky remains bewitching.
The guide will pick up you at Cascina Gobba tube stop (on the Green Line MM2) with the van and drive you out of the city to the starting point of the tour.
